1Who we are

In short: Solarian Welfare runs Find Fundi and is responsible for your data.

Find Fundi is run by Solarian Welfare, a registered self-help group in Kenya ("we", "us"). We decide how the personal data on Find Fundi is used, which makes us the data controller under Kenya's Data Protection Act, 2019.

This policy explains what we collect, why, who can see it, and what you can ask us to do with it. For anything about your data, email rickyngigi2020@gmail.com.

2What we collect

In short: what you type, record and upload, plus your location when you choose to share it.

Your account. Your name, email address, phone number, area, and street or building if you add one. A profile photo if you upload one. If you sign in with Google, we receive your name and email address from Google. Passwords are handled by our sign-in provider and we never see them.

Jobs you post. The kind of work, your written description, voice note, photos, urgency, area, and the map location you set for the job. We also keep the price the fundi sends, whether you accepted it, how you said you'd pay, the job's progress, and when each step happened.

If you apply as a fundi. Your trade, national ID number, highest qualification, years of experience, a PDF copy of your national ID or passport, either PDF certificates proving your trade or a note that you have none, any notes we make at your interview, and a short bio. We also keep your verification status, whether you are online, when your fundi app last checked in, and the dates of jobs you completed so you can see your earnings.

Live location. If you are a fundi and switch on location sharing, your device's location is sent to us while sharing is on. We keep only your latest position.

Ratings. The star rating and comment a customer leaves after a job.

Technical details. Your browser stores a sign-in token so you stay logged in. Our server briefly uses your IP address to block floods of requests, and doesn't store it for anything else. We don't use advertising or tracking cookies.

3How we use it

In short: to run bookings, check fundis, and keep the service safe.

We use your data to:

  • create and run your account;
  • show your job to fundis who do that kind of work, and connect you with the fundi you book;
  • let customers and fundis agree a price and track the job;
  • review fundi applications and decide who is verified;
  • show a booked fundi's location to their customer, when the fundi shares it;
  • show fundis their completed jobs and earnings;
  • handle complaints, prevent fraud and misuse, and meet our legal obligations.

We use it this way because it is needed to provide the service you signed up for, because you chose to share it (for example, live location), because we have a legitimate interest in keeping Find Fundi safe, or because the law requires it.

We don't sell your personal data, and we don't use it for advertising.

4Who can see what

In short: other users see only what they need for a job. Your ID documents stay with us.

This is exactly who can see each kind of information on Find Fundi, other than you:

Information Who else can see it
Job description, photos, voice note and job location Verified fundis in that job's category, while the job is open. Then the fundi who takes it.
Your name, phone number and profile photo The other person on a job, once a fundi has been booked for it.
A verified fundi's name, area, trade, years of experience, bio and whether they're available now Signed-in customers choosing a fundi for a job.
A fundi's live location Only the customer of a job that fundi is currently booked for, and only while sharing is switched on.
Price, payment method and job progress The customer and the booked fundi.
Ratings and review comments The customer and the fundi on that job.
National ID number, ID photo, qualification and certificate No other users. Only Find Fundi's admin team, to review applications.
Your email address, and a customer's area and street No other users. Only Find Fundi's admin team.

Find Fundi's admin team can access account and job information when they need to, for example to review a fundi application, handle a complaint or investigate misuse.

5Services we rely on

In short: a few trusted companies store and deliver the service for us, sometimes outside Kenya.

We use these providers to run Find Fundi. They handle data on our behalf and only as needed to provide their service:

  • Supabase stores our database, your uploaded files and handles sign-in.
  • Google provides "Continue with Google" sign-in, and maps for showing locations.
  • Google Fonts and jsDelivr deliver the fonts and code the pages load, which means they receive your IP address when you visit.

Some of these providers store or process data on servers outside Kenya. Where that happens, we rely on the safeguards the Data Protection Act requires for transfers out of the country.

We may also share information if the law requires it, such as a valid request from the police or a court.

6How long we keep it

In short: while your account is open, unless you ask us to delete it.

We keep your data for as long as your account is open. If you ask us to delete your account, we delete your personal data, uploads and jobs, except for anything we must keep to meet a legal obligation or deal with an open complaint or dispute. We keep that only as long as needed.

A fundi's live location is overwritten each time a new position is sent, so we hold only the most recent one.

7Your rights

In short: you can see, fix, or delete your data, and complain to the Data Commissioner.

Under Kenya's Data Protection Act, 2019, you have the right to:

  • be told how your data is used, which is what this policy is for;
  • get a copy of the personal data we hold about you;
  • have wrong or incomplete data corrected (you can edit most of your profile yourself in Settings);
  • have your data deleted;
  • object to us using your data in a particular way;
  • receive your data in a format you can take elsewhere.

You can stop sharing your live location at any time by switching it off in the fundi app.

To use any of these rights, email rickyngigi2020@gmail.com from the address on your account. We may ask you to confirm who you are before acting on a request.

If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you can complain to the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner at odpc.go.ke.

8Keeping it secure

In short: access is locked down by account, but no system is perfect.

Data travels to Find Fundi over encrypted connections. Access rules in our database decide which account can read each record and file, so, for example, a fundi's ID documents can't be opened by other users. Job changes such as prices go through our server, which checks that you are allowed to make them.

No online service can promise perfect security. If we learn of a breach that puts your data at real risk, we will tell you and the Data Protection Commissioner as the law requires.

9Changes to this policy

In short: if we change how we use your data, we'll update this page and tell you.

We'll update this policy when Find Fundi changes how it uses data, for example if we add payments through the app. We'll change the "Last updated" date at the top, and for important changes we'll tell you in the app or by email before they take effect.
